5Nice case, lightweight, fits well

By TennWriter I bought this case to replace a similar one from Targus that I bought about 10 years ago and for which the zippers finally wore out. This case is similar to my previous one but is less rugged. In particular, the fabric seems thinner and the bottom of the case lacks the reinforcing hard plastic bumpers that my old one had. On the plus side, this model is lightweight and fits my small-to-medium frame better than my old one did. (The straps on my old one seemed designed for a beefier person than me; they were set so wide that they tended to fall off my shoulders unless I cinched them up tightly.) And like my old one, this case has the internal air cushions that cradle the laptop and give excellent impact protection. My old case safely transported by venerable Dell across continents for many years; I hope this model endures so well. On the down side, I wish this case had more interior pockets. While it has plenty of raw space for things like chargers, spare batteries, calculators, and office items, there are few ways to organize stuff effectively. I wound up buying some vinyl zipper bags to segregate items within the accessory pocket. All in all, a nice case ... and the zip-through feature works great. On a recent trip through Atlanta and Miami International, TSA seemed knowledgeable about the zip-through feature and didn't balk at all, which saved me a lot of time and aggravation going through security. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.

4Targus CUCT02B

By perak This is the 2nd Targus backpack I have bought for my husband. I did a lot of research on various brands. He loves this one and it's reasonably priced. The style is simple but very functional. Very good quality and great for a lap top. I'd reccomend this to anyone in the middle age group as the style is subtle but yet handsome. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.

5Just what I needed!

By Jen "Amazon Fan" I travel Monday through Thursday every week, and going through security and protecting my back are both concerns. This backpack has been perfect for keeping me comfortable, organized, and whizzing through security, since I just unzip the middle and send it on through. The only annoying thing is that just because I'm ready to go through doesn't mean the people struggling in front of me in line are! See all 15 customer reviews...

4Nice laptop bag, but not as big as it looks

By Laura I This backpack works really good as a laptop carrier, and you could also carry the cords, etc, but it's not nearly as big as it looks in the photo. In the photo it looks as if it could double as a school backpack, and it couldn't. That's not a drawback for *me*, but I just want to make that clear to a potential buyer. Aside from that, it's very well made, sturdy, and comfortable. It's also a nice alternative to the all too common messenger bag if that's not your style. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.

5Solidly Built

By Joel Schopp I've had this laptop backpack for 3 months now. I own two other laptop backpacks and since I've had this one I've never wanted to go back to using them. This backpack is surprisingly comfortable. The shoulder straps aren't bulky, but they are slightly padded and adjustable in length at the bottom and in depth at the top. The laptop compartment sits next to the wearer's back and is padded with breathable mesh padding in a way that both protects the laptop and makes the backpack comfortable to wear. I haven't gotten sticky back, where sweat from your back makes your shirt stick to you after taking off a backpack, while wearing it. The build quality is uncompromising. The zippers are sturdy and in 3 months of daily use have snagged exactly 0 times. It looks exactly like the day I got it. No loose stitches, no signs of wear, no signs of fatigue. The laptop pocket is separate from the other pockets, so you don't have to worry about mayo from your lunch getting in your keyboard. That pocket is padded on both sides to protect the laptop from other things in the bag and from the outside world. The non-laptop pockets are two layer material. Outside is a durable almost rubberized material that seems very water resistant, along with reinforcements in key areas of nylon webbing. Inside the pockets are lined with a thinner non-rubbarized nylon that also seems quite sturdy. Another comparison point is an Osprey daypack I use when hiking outdoors without my laptop. Osprey makes packs that are guaranteed for life and charge accordingly. Both backpacks seem to use the same mesh padding on the back (the Targus laptop pack has additional padding behind that for the laptop). Both have the same material for the lining of the pockets. Both have similar quality zippers, though my Osprey zippers snag some due to how they are built in. The shell material in the Targus seems more water resistant and more durable. Really the only downside I can find is that the yellow color lining the laptop pocket on the Dusty Green/Black and Yellow Accents model is not very attractive. But you only see that when you are opening the pocket to put a laptop in or out, so it's not that big of a deal to me. Highly reccomended. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.

4Heavy Duty Pack

By Lemon This is a very well-made backpack that I use when I am transporting my computer - but also just to take back and forth to work. Lots of pockets - plenty of protection for your laptop - a quality product. See all 24 customer reviews...

4Great Laptop Backpack!

By L. Dustin

Just what I was looking for. Ordered two one for my daughter and one for me. Plenty of room. I was concerned if it would hold my 17 inch laptop. NO Problem! Fits with room to spare. Plenty of pockets, even a hidden pocket on the back. Light weight but seems sturdy. Limited 5 year warr. to boot!

It has a sunglass holder on one strap and a cell phone pouch on the other. There is a place for your MP3 player, two water bottle holders on the side and a handle on top.

Over all I think it was a great buy for under $45 but not worth the retail price of $120.

Kind of concerned...."SwissGear" Made in China (minus one star)! But then try to find items that are not now a days. I just expected SwissGear was made in you know where!

Update....

Just made a trip via commercial airline. Quickly packed this item. I was more than surprized that not only did I fit my 17" laptop, ipod, sunglasses, textbook, garmin GPS but also...my 15" work laptop with power cords. Believe it or not there was still room for more. The funny part is that the backpack did not look from the outside that it contained anywhere near that ammount of stuff. I could have added a couple of bottles of water but due to airport regulations you only are allowed a few ounces of liquids.

4Good overall bag

By RJL
Bought this to hold first aid supplies for Boy Scout camp outs. Does a fine job and easy to see. There is even a pocket on the back of the pack near the lumbar area. Smooth zippers that don' catch is always nice.

4Very nice pack, but not quite big enough . . .

By hhludwig
Very nice pack, though the made in China mentioned in other reviews threw me off too.

Unlike the other reviewer I could not fit my 17" laptop in the bag without forcing it so it doesn't fit the need I bought it for. Fortunately my brother has a birthday coming up and a 15" laptop.

4Great comfort, stability and looks but disappointing storage

By Matthew Eland
This is a very nice and surprisingly light and comfortable backpack. It securely and safely carries my HP TouchSmart tx series notebook (12 inch) with room to spare but tight enough and padded enough to prevent the notebook from moving during transit.

The only downside of the Cobalt is the pocket configurations. It has one large main area with a padded area for a laptop. This compartment is great and needs to be - it's the reason to buy this kind of a bag.

Next up from the center is a tall / wide zippered area without much depth. This goes the height of the pack and is handy for larger items you might want to throw in there. This would have been a good document pocket if it had a mesh area or other device to prevent papers from being crushed. It does have a pocket that can hold accessories or thin devices such as a Kindle (though it will move from side to side so a case or cover should be used).

There's a small pocket at the top of the back with no subdivisions. This is good for miscellaneous items such as identification that don't need any padding but should be easy to access.

Finally, the lower pouch has the standard SwissGear notebook carrier accessory comparment which is good for things like business cards, screen cleaning materials, etc. There are a lot of very thin very shallow pockets here. It's hard to access items in these pockets and I would have preferred fewer, wider pockets.

Exterior features:
- Two mesh bottle holders on either side
- Four loops on the lower pocket designed to catch branches as you walk by, carry carrots, or provide a spot to tie a rope to your pack so you can drag Gollum behind you. Honestly, I have no idea what these are for but they look like you can do something with them.

Overall: Perfect comfort and safety, great quality and style, but pocket configurations don't have the same level of perfection.

5I love this backpack

By guy
I needed a light weight, non-bulky, and stylish backpack to carry my 13" laptop, books, and computer accessories. The SwissGear Cobalt backpack met all my requirements and more. It is a great looking backpack, very light, and stocked with packets galore.

The main compartment consists of a roomy area for large books and binders. Within the main compartment, there is a sleeve for a 15.6" laptop. Even with the laptop in tow, there is still plenty of room for books and binders. Also the main compartment has a stiff padded bottom cardboard so that the bottom does not sag with the weight of books. It also prevents the backpack from tipping over when placed on the floor. The padded cardboard can be folded away so that the backpack can be stored when empty. This is a great feature.

Then it has compartments! The second large compartment is not as roomy as the main compartment. It was designed to carry a 2" 3-ring binder or a slim book. Within the second large compartment, there is a pocket for thin paper items such as envelopes.

At the top, by the red cross emblem, it has a quick access zippered compartment for a cell phone, wallet, money, passport, sunglasses, etc. The bottom zippered compartment has small pockets for pens, business cards, and other small items. Within this compartment, another zippered compartment is available about the size of the compartment by the red cross emblem.

Carrying this backpack fully loaded is extremely comfortable. The straps and the backside are so well padded that it is a joy to go places with it.

The blue material is darker than what is shown on the picture. It has a slight sheen, which makes the backpack look elegant.

5Great backpack

By Dogma
Good protection, comfortable, lots of pockets; everything you want in a computer backpack. I use it for my 13" Macbook pro and the laptop still fits in the backpack pocket even if I leave the neoprene case on the computer. It seems very sturdy and looks nice too.

5Probably the best pack on the market for commuting with a small number of items

By zachariahcox
In my opinion this is the best macbook + ios devices + peripherials + sunglasses + umbrella backpack on the market today. I am an iOS application developer and I have to lug this stuff (and basically not a whole lot else) back and forth from my house every day and I must have tried 50 backpacks before settling on this one. I was looking for the smallest, at least vaguely professional-looking bag that would carry all my tiny heavy items that has enough padding that I'm not worried about setting the thing down on a hard surface. This one fits the bill nicely. Some observations:

The material used for the center part of the top flap is a little cheap feeling (would have preferred the ballistic nylon stuff the rest of the backpack is made from, or leather or something) and the actual straps are of below average quality, but functional.

The velcro strap used to attach it to my carry-on luggage is very convenient, and the zipper-expansion feature allows me to use this instead of a larger laptop bag on planes where I have more than the usual number of things to carry.

I have never written a product review before in my life, but I spent a month looking for one of these things and maybe I can save someone else some time.

5Stylish, Sturdy and Light.

By The Three Woods
Finally a stylish backpack made to safely protect your laptop, iPad, iPod, cell phone and various other electronic devices. The padded shoulder straps add extra comfort when carrying around a full load. Don't feel like carrying it? A velcro belt allows this backpack to be attached securely to your roll on luggage. This is a backpack that has a place for everything to be stored to give optimal protection to your electronic devices. I love the padded, "velvet"-lined pocket for my iPad to keep the screen safe from scratches. The only downside to it was having to remove my Otterbox case to get the iPad to fit properly in it's pocket. With the iPod, iPhone, netbook, laptop, and iPad/tablet all safely tucked away in their various compartments, I still had room (and pockets) to spare for my books, writing utensils, flash drive, wires & accessories, CDs, etc. without making the backpack feel over crowded. The light teal inner lining adds sophistication to this perfect little backpack. It is not bulky when filled and is very comfortable to wear. I took numerous pictures and some video to show the inside of the backpack which I hope to upload later. If you have the chance to view this backpack in a store, I highly suggest it! You will not be disappointed in it's versatility. There is one small mesh pocket in the flap of the backpack - I used it for wires. The small velvet-lined pocket is perfect for your iPad or tablet. Two padded pockets leave space for your netbook and a larger laptop. (My thicker macbook almost proved to be a little too large for the backpack with everything else in it. A thinner laptop 15" and under would have no problem fitting.) The deep center pocket (perfect for a binder, textbook and/or portfolio) has two mesh smaller pockets that I used for some CDs. (Note: the center pocket can be made larger with a zipper - located on the outside of the backpack- that gives 1" more storage on the inside). The center pocket also has a zippered compartment that I used for a paperback novel and a calculator. Outside the backpack, your wallet, cell phone and iPod will be safely protected in a zippered pocket with two writing utensil holders to keep your pens and/or pencils in handy reach. Another stretchy pocket lies outside of the zippered pocket. Finally, there are two side pockets that I used to hold a small water bottle in one and a granola bar in the other.
All in all, I was really pleased with this laptop backpack and quickly replaced my numerous other carry cases with it. I would have loved this in college!

5Great backpack for the technology sophisticate

By M.P.H
The Corvus 114 is an attractive and sleek backpack for techies. It is designed for some of today's hottest electronic items, specifically the Apple MacBook Pro, the iPad, iPhone and Amazon Kindle products. The outer material is made of durable, weather resistant black nylon with stretchable accents on the bottom and sides. The shoulder straps loop through a reinforced plastic casing which ensures durability for extended use and heavy loads. There is also a Velcro strap laying flat on the back which allows you to attach the pack to a roller-board/carry-on luggage. The back is also padded for comfort and additional protection for inside electronic items. Other notable exterior features include: an extendable outer shell for larger loads (via a zipper which runs around the perimeter of the pack) and a Velcro clip which allows you to cinch the extraneous strap fabric which typically dangles at the bottom of the shoulder straps.

The interior features make this backpack really stand out for technology users. First, there is an inside slip pouch which fits a 13" or 15" MacBook Pro perfectly (the standard MacBook, MacBook Air, or any 13-14" widescreen laptop will fit as well). Behind this there is a separate pouch which is designed to hold the Apple iPad (or iPad 2, or Amazon Kindle version 1, 2 or 3). It is important to note that if you keep your iPad permanently stored in any kind of bulky casing, this pouch will be too snug to fit the iPad + case. However, the inside of the pouch is lined in an extremely soft microfiber which will keep your iPad screen perfectly safe from scratches and debris. The main interior pouch will easily store a journal, notebook, textbook or your iPad in its case. This portion is extendable by opening the exterior zipper. There are a few small, deep mesh pouches which are intended for your power adapters/cables for your various devices. Finally, there are two pouches which can be accessed without opening the top cover of the backpack which can store your phone, iPod, wallet, pens, keys, lunch or whatever else. There are two pouches which wrap around the sides of the pack which can be used for storing a bottled water or additional cords.

Overall, this is a very well designed and attractively built technology backpack. It would be an outstanding choice for frequent subway, bus or airplane commuters and/or individuals who find themselves taking their entire entourage of electronic devices out on a regular basis. Unlike standard backpacks, the compartments in this pack are designed specifically for your iPad/Kindle/MacBook therefore they fit like a glove and don't "float around" loosely inside your backpack. Furthermore, the interior is detailed with high quality materials and soft microfiber to keep your electronics clean and safe from damage.

For the price, I would consider this a worthy investment and a quality built product. Case Logic has done well to develop a pack which caters to high-end electronics users. I will be using this stylish backpack to transport my iPad + MacBook + iPhone + Kindle to work every single day. Very pleased with the product, highly recommended! A+

4Function Comes First

By Rawim
The only problem I have with this backpack is that it is a little dorky looking. Very plain looking, all black with matte silver zippers. Other then that, this is a great backpack!

As someone who lugs around a decent sized widescreen laptop, this is exactly the kind of laptop you would like to have. The rear portion of the backpack contains a padded area for you to store your laptop. Padded as to not damage the computer and to not cause you any discomfort also the lining of this pocket is soft as to not scratch any of the surfaces of your laptop.

The bag features a zipper that basically allows you to split the backpack in half and lay it down flat for scanning through the x-ray machine at airports. This of course is nice since you aren't pulling out your laptop and tossing it in one of those dirty gray bins and getting it scratched, etc..

The front half of the bag contains three other pockets, a smaller one on the front, a slightly larger one behind that which contains smaller pockets for pens, business cards and other small items, then you have one larger pocket which has room for things like power adapters, Cd's, etc..

A couple of other nice features:
The bag is designed to hold it's shape and stand up right when set down. The shoulder straps are padded and curved, making them very easy and comfortable to use. And a nice little touch the adjustable straps that normally dangle after you adjust them, these straps have nifty little Velcro pieces that allow you to roll them up and keep them from getting dirty when you have the bag on the ground or getting caught on stuff as you walk around.

Suffice to say, the bag may not be the coolest looking backpack out there, but you can tell that a lot of thought was put into it design, the designers remembered the little things that annoy you about backpacks that you wished you could fix. Glad I have it!

4Security friendly, not so much on the features

By Naomi (Storm)
This is my second Case Logic "security friendly" piece of luggage, and like the CLCS-116 over-the-shoulder messenger type bag, the CLBS-116 backpack has a lot of nice features but seems to be missing a lot of the every day features you expect with most laptop bags.

Of the many laptop backpacks I've owned, the OGIO Metro Backpack and discontinued Samsonite Rafter are my top two favorite, so I use them as a baseline for comparison purposes. Compared to those two bags, this Case Logic is firmly planted on the "Spartan" side of the fence. It's very low on features, but what it does, it does well. Most of what I said in my Case Logic 16-Inch Full-Size Security Friendly Laptop Case (CLCS-116) can be repeated here for much of the pro's and con's carry through to this backpack model - with a few changes.

Pros:

- Non-laptop half of the bag has lots of good segmented and non-segmented compartments. Good for holding gadgets like Blackberries, phones, MP3 players, power cords, pens, books, etc...
- Small semi-hidden "wallet" hole for hiding cash.
- Zipper sliders are metal, not plastic (a big plus in my book). Zipper teeth are mostly plastic with the exception of the front zipper which is metal. All zippers on my bag pulled nice and smooth.
- Holds my 15.4" laptop like a champ - lots of padding, plenty of room.
- Put my Inspiron 1720 17" laptop in, just to see if it'd fit. "Kind of" would be a good description - the laptop fit, but only because I removed the battery (Dell laptops have gone to a configuration where the battery hangs off the back end). The 17" laptop is pushing at the seams of the compartment, so not a whole lot of padding left at the sides. Not bad for a backpack that advertises itself as a 16" laptop backpack.
- Secondary "stuff" pocket is full sized, extending wide enough to hold a hefty 3-4" phonebook-sized item.
- Relatively light for a backpack at 3lbs.
- Nice "pass-through" feature which lets you thread the pull bar of rolling luggage through allowing for piggy-backing of the pack.

Cons:
- No headphones hole - thought that was odd for Case Logic.
- Very little padding in non-laptop half of the case - careful with your gadgets!
- No side pockets, mostly because you have to open it up for the security screening.
- Not a whole lot of extension allowance - if your items don't fit, they won't fit. The stitch is stiff nylon so there's not a lot of give.
- The straps are attached by way of two Z-stitches at the top and a double-stitch to an extension at the bottom - if you overload your backpacks a lot like I do, these stitches probably won't last very long. However if you're just hauling a laptop, a book, and a few gadgets, this should last a lifetime.

Conclusion:

Since this backpack is a "Generation 1" of these security bags, I'm hoping that the future will bring more cost-effective and feature rich bags. The cost itself is probably prohibitive enough to bring this backpack out of the reach of most students, and honestly if the only benefit that you're getting is that you don't have to put the laptop in the scanning device, it's probably not enough for most people to purchase this backpack. However if you're the consultant type who takes semi-daily business trips, being able to fly through the security checkpoint with just your backpack and shoes removed is probably enough of an incentive to grab this bag. Plus the design is clean enough to look professional.

4Intelligent Travel Solutions: A Case Logic 16-Inch Security-Friendly Laptop Backpack (CLBS-116) Review

By L. T. Beasimer
I regularly travel by airplane and I'm a student, so I decided to try the Case Logic security friendly laptop backpack. According to Case Logic, this backpack will get a person through security checkpoints quickly while fully protecting the laptop and sensitive documents. When approaching an X-ray machine, just unzip and lay flat on the conveyer belt. At the other end, just lift the handle and go.

On my most recent trip, I packed the bag with a 15.4" Dell Latitude D800, a couple school books, some papers, the usual laptop stuff, and some other junk; all together the bag weighed about 20 pounds. I also travel with a Tamrac Expedition 5 backpack containing a digital SLR, several lenses, filters and more resulting with a bag weighing about 20 pounds as well. Considering these two bags weigh the same, the camera bag with its waist strap and shoulder strap connector over the chest feels much lighter on the shoulders. The additional straps distribute the weight better, but would slow down the removal process. However Case Logic's luggage strap allows for carrying the backpack on your suitcase while strapped to the handle.

A lot of thought went into the construction and organizational properties of this laptop backpack Even though Case Logic indicates the plush laptop compartment will hold a 16" laptop, I was able to pack a 17" HP G70-246US comfortably without any zipper closure fuss; although the top corners could be identified. For screening purposes, nothing but the laptop should be stored in this section. The main storage area has a couple pockets to stash the cord and other accessories while allowing plenty of room for books and papers. The front compartment provides many pockets for organizing and includes a clip to hold a key ring. Plus a hidden passport storage compartment is placed between the two zippered halves.

The pre-screening security officer busily warned people to pull out their laptops, but I ignored him. I took the bag off my back, unzipped the two center zippers and laid the properly packed bag out flat on the conveyor belt. The bag passed inspection without any issues. On the other end, I grabbed the main handle and the bag went naturally back together for zipping even though I chose to do so later. Keep in mind, Case Logic warns "It is up to the discretion of the US Transportation Security Officer whether a laptop sleeve can pass without further screening." This by far was the easiest experience passing a laptop through security I can recall.

If you're looking for a laptop bag for traveling which can get you through security check points quickly and hassle free, strongly consider the Case Logic security friendly laptop backpack. The executive on the go would benefit the most, but even the occasional traveler could make use of this sturdy and effective laptop bag. Plus this bag is backed by a 25 year warranty.

PROS:
Sturdy and well constructed
Ample back padding
Manufactured for organization
Luggage strap

CONS:
Feels heavy on the shoulders
