By M. WillitsI really wanted to like this bag. I had my eye on it and decided to purchase after reading some rave reviews. When it arrived, I was excited for all the storage pockets, and the side-loading laptop compartment was terrific. Overall, it seemed a great design. Stitching was fantastic, and the thought put into arranging the angle of the zippers was evident. I packed up everything and went to our local coffee shop ready to get some work done. I set down the bag on the floor and -- thud.Apparently, there's plenty of padding everywhere except where it really matters: at the base of the bag inside the laptop compartment. What suffices for protection here is a floppy little tube-like cushion sewed onto the base inside the laptop compartment. After some investigation, I discovered that this cushion flops side-to-side so much that when I put my laptop inside the compartment, ziped it up, and walked around for a bit to simulate normal use, the weight of the laptop pushes this cushion aside and rests against the bag shell itself. At this point, a few millimeters of nylon is all that protects your laptop from any surface on which you'd normally set down a bag.Thankfully, I have a hardshell case on my laptop, so it was okay. However, for the bag, this glaring design oversight warranted an immediate return to Amazon.

By A. KelleyI originally bought the Q backpack from Timbuk2, but it was too small for my stuff. The H.A.L. is the perfect size for my school stuff, work stuff, and random stuff. But it doesn't feel too big for my 5'1" frame. It also fits my 17" laptop, which not many bags do. Lots of pockets to put random stuff in. If you are looking for a new bag check it out.

By daskiingMany reviews knock the cushion at the bottom of the laptop compartment, but it has not been an issue for me. True, it is only attached in one place and seems like it could roll around but it is sufficiently thick that it just smashes under the computer and protects it nicely. Overall it is a well designed bag with a sufficient number of pockets and rugged construction. It has plenty of space without being a huge dorky bag. I'm glad i went with this one and not the smaller Timbuk2, enough room for laptop, a couple books, lunch, and a sweatshirt.Good Bag
